In the film, a girl and boy from working-class families in Stockholm run away from home to spend a secluded, romantic summer at the beach. Before long, the pair are forced give up on their little fairy tale to return to reality. Well, when this story of young lovers was re-cut/re-edited by the American distributors, it turned into something much more salacious! In hindsight, it’s not surprising that American’s have been struggling to grapple with Bergman’s particular brand of film-making from pretty much the get go!
