La Grande Illusion is one of the most important anti-war films ever made and it was the breakout film by legendary French filmmaker Jean Renoir. First release material for this film is extremely scarce as the Nazis tried to destroy all prints during their occupation of France. However, in the wake of WWII the film was rediscovered by a new generation that had been exhausted by war. Praised for Renoir’s direction and hailed by critics, there were multiple releases ate 1940s and early 1950s. I have not found any evidence this film was released in Japan prior to WWII, making this 1949 poster likely from the 1st Japanese release. The poster is very rare and features an urgent design with bold use of color.
