Grade: C5 Very Good to Fine. Folded, single-sided. Theater used poster with moderate to heavy handling/surface/edge wear. Would grade much higher if not for an accumulation of small flaws including numerous extra horizontal folds, the two panels having been glued together, and a paper snipe glued along the bottom edge. The poster retains strong original colors and mounted on linen would appear near mint with very little restoration required.
Framing: List prices are for posters only. Please inquire to discuss framing options.
Jigoku is one of the most influential of all Japanese horror films. While other directors of the era were still creating more traditional “ghostly” horror films (some of the best examples are Kwaidan and Onibaba), Nobuo Nakagawa was busy pushing the boundaries of gore and good taste. Made on a shoestring budget and released to little fanfare — Jigoku has grown to cult status over the years and has been remade several times.
Any original release material is extremely rare and Marquee Poster is lucky enough to have acquired both style B2 posters and this very rare STB. This movie was released in major Japanese markets under the title 地獄 (Hell) and as it made its way to smaller markets it was also promoted under the titles 八大地獄 幽霊物語 (rough translation, 8 Hell Ghost Story) and 怪奇妖霊地獄 (rough translation, Mysterious Spirit Hell). Please note, this STB is undersized compared to normal STBs but it has not been trimmed.
