One of the most important movies of the 1960s, Cool Hand Luke somehow managed to bottle up all the frustrations and punishment of the vietnam war, the civil rights movement, and anti-government protests and present it as a narrowly-focused prison drama in the 50s American South. And of course, Paul Newman’s acting chops are on full display as Lucas “Luke” Jackson, a decorated World War II veteran who struggles to find his place in the world. Despite the grim setting, ‘ole Cool Hand Luke always seems to have light shining from within. Fun Fact: The famous quote, “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate” was listed at No. 11 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 most memorable movie lines.
While most of the posters for this campaign are based on the same abstract sillouhette design, in the original materials Newman’s image was photo-based. This incredible Spanish 1-sheet isn’t signed, but I’d be my last dollar that the gorgeous and tragic, hand-drawn portrait of Paul Newman was done by Macario Gómez Quibus — better known as simply “mac”. A rare poster in this condition.
