Along with Psycho, the Birds is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s few straight horror films. Interestingly, the story is at least in part based on actual events in the summer of 1961 when thousands of seagulls smashed into houses along the northern California coast line. Unlike Hitchcock’s film, however, which offers no reason for the birds terrifying behavior, scientists were able to attribute the suicidal behavior of the CA gulls to toxic algae blooms that had infected their prey of anchovies and squid.
This Japanese ‘speed’ poster has one of the most simple and understated designs from any country. The red block title, the bird silhouettes and minimal Kanji combine to give this poster a very clean aesthetic. This style rarely surfaces and the minor defects would almost completely disappear if linen-backed. One of the absolute best posters for this terrifying film!
