Grade: C7 Fine to Very Fine. Tri-folded, single-sided. Prior to restoration this was a theater-used poster with minor handling/surface/fold wear. The restoration required very little work and now presents as very fine to near mint from normal viewing distances.

Nouvelle Vague, or New Wave, was a movement in French cinema starting in the 1950s that helped give rise to a more powerful and impactful independent film industry globally. While there were earlier New Wave films such as Agnès Varda’s La Pointe Courte in 1955, the two films most associated with the movement were François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows in 1959, followed closely by Jean Luc Godard’s Breathless less than a year later. The New Wave movement’s central tenet, a rejection of traditional filmmaking conventions and safe, commercial studio control, appealed to audiences globally.
The 400 Blows was a huge success in Japan, and remained in distribution long enough that it received multiple poster styles. However, none is more iconic or prized by collectors than this amazing design by famed Japanese film critic and artist Hisamitsu Noguchi (野口久光). Some poster collectors prioritize important films, others collect based on design, and still others focus on rarity or uniqueness. Every once in a while a certain poster ticks ALL the boxes and truly has universal appeal amongst film poster collectors, movie buffs and artists alike. This incredibly rare 400 Blows Japanese B2 is one of those posters.
