19th century Paris is on full display in John Huston’s quasi-autobiography of famed poster artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Audiences follow him as he navigates the gritty underside of Paris’s sex and drug subculture in the burlesque palace, Moulin Rouge. While achieving moderate commercial success and receiving seven Academy Award nominations (and two wins!), Huston would later claim the strict 1950s censorship constraints had made it impossible to tell the true salacious stories of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec’s life!
This French poster is a great celebration of the film and the spirit of the titular pleasure palace — which welcomed rich and poor alike to forget the troubles and enjoy life! This huge poster would make an awesome and colorful impact in any room.
