The rarity of this ‘green title” Dawn of the Dead poster cannot be understated! It was only ten years since Romero’s breakthrough Night of the Living Dead and zombies hadn’t achieved the cultural importance they enjoy today! It was assumed his follow-up would only appeal to hard core fans and teenager so the first release was targeted at drive-in theaters (remember those?) with this ‘green title’ poster. Not surprisingly, Romero’s film defied expectations and became a midnight movie hit! They re-designed the poster with a ‘red title’ and released the movie wide, perhaps with a bit of irony, to suburban shopping malls around the country! Lanny Powers amazing art works regardless of title color, but there is somethind special about this ‘green title’ version and it always ranks among the top collected posters for this important film.
