This obscure Italian film from 1971 is based on a Polynesian legend about the quest for peace and solitude — something we can all relate to! The main character Tanai sets out in his canoe armed with only his knowledge of the ocean and a breadfruit tree, which he intends to plant when he finds the uninhabited island of his dreams. With a plot vaguely resembling Homer’s Odyssey, Tanai’s quest requires him to brave multiple challenges including powerful ocean storms, and leads him to chance encounters with savage tribes and European castaways.
For the Hungarian release of this film in 1975, artist Máté András dreamed up a gorgeous, abstract view Tanai’s canoe braving the wilds of the open Pacific Ocean. A stunning poster representing the quest for paradise!
